Having purchased a Leica M (Typ 240), I asked myself how this camera fares in comparison with the Leica X Vario size-wise and weight-wise. Therefore, I prepared some quick photos that helped me answer this question more easily. I also supply some size and weight data.
Camera | Size*: W x H x D | Remarks |
Leica M (Typ 240) | 138.6 mm x 80 mm x 42 mm | EVF not included |
Leica X Vario | 133 x 73 x 95 mm / 5.24 x 2.87 x 3.74 in | EVF not included |
All data according to the manufacturers' specifications.
The following size comparisons are primarily meant to compare the camera bodies. The Leica M can be fitted with lenses of various sizes - here a 50 mm lens is used. Since I own only one EVF, I do not use it here in the size comparisons.

Camera | Weight (according to the manufacturer) |
Leica M (Typ 240) | Ca. 680 g (with battery) |
Leica X Vario | Ca. 650/680 g / 22.9/24 oz (without/with battery) |
A fully equipped Leica M (Typ 240) including battery, SD card, EVF, Peak Design shoulder strap, halfcase, and Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f/1.5 weighs 1060 g (1067 with lens cap). For comparison, the Leica X Vario equipped with a battery, an SD card, the EVF, the protector, the lens hood without cap, and the shoulder strap weighs 760 g with the Leica shoulder strap, and 772 g with the Peak Design shoulder strap (including two anchors).
