Messier 58 (M 58)

Introduction | Map | My Own Photos | Own Observations | References

On this page I collect my observations of the barred spiral galaxy M 58 (NGC 4579) in the constellation Virgo.

Introduction

According to Karkoschka, the bar of the barred spiral galaxy M 58 in the constellation Virgo should be just about visible in the telescope. In the eVscope, I found the bar hard to recognize. In the Vespera, the galaxy is too small anyway...

The four Messier galaxies M 58, M 87, M 89, and M 90 form a triangle in my Vespera mosaic (see below) with a bright dot in the center. M 58 is the lower left edge of the triangle (in my Vespera mosaic).

M 58 (NGC 4579)
Size: 5.5' x 4.5' (SkySafari), 2,5 x 1,5' (Stoyan), 5' (Karkoschka)
Distance: 60/65 million light years (Stoyan/Karkoschka)
Rating: * (Stoyan)
