IC 1318

Introduction | Map | My Own Photos | My Own Observations | References

On this page I collect my observations of the of the emission Nebula IC 1318 around the star Sadr/Gamma Cygni (Sadr region) in the constellation Cygnus. There are also a few open star clusters included...

Introduction

The Gamma Cygni Nebula (Gamma Cygni = Sadr), also known as the Butterfly Nebula, is an emission nebula and H-II region in the constellation Cygnus (the Swan). It is approximately 1,500/4,900 light-years away from us and has a diameter of about 100 light-years. At its center lies the star Sadr, located 1,500 light-years away. Of the three parts of the nebula (IC 1318 A, B, C), the last two are separated by the dark cloud LDN 889, which is about 20 light-years wide.

In Dwarf mini and Vespera Pro mosaics, you can capture the open star cluster NGC 6910 along with the IC 1318 nebula near the star Sadr. In the Vespera Pro mosaic, you can also capture M 29 along with the IC 1318 nebula.
